Fees and discounts

How the payment preview shows fees, and how the statement discount applies when you pay in time.

Before any payment is submitted, the Payments portal shows a payment preview with every line item — the invoices, fees, and discount — so you know exactly what will be charged.

Fee preview

The preview includes:

  • The invoices, debit adjustments, and credit adjustments you selected, with amounts.
  • Your chosen payment method (ACH or card).
  • Any fees associated with the payment.
  • The statement discount, if applicable.
  • The total amount that will be charged.

Take a moment to confirm the total matches what you expected. If something looks off, go back and adjust your selections before submitting.

Who pays the fee?

Fee structure is set during dealer onboarding. Depending on how your dealer configured it, you may see the fee added to your payment, or you may not see a fee at all. The preview is always the source of truth: whatever total it shows is what will be charged.

If you have a question about a specific fee, your dealer can explain how their fee policy works.

Statement discount

If your dealer runs monthly statements in Spruce, you can capture a statement discount by paying the full statement balance by the discount date set on the statement.

The discount only applies when:

  • You are paying through the Current Statement view.
  • You are paying the full statement balance, not a partial amount.
  • Today is on or before the discount date.

If those three conditions are met, the preview shows the discount applied automatically, and the total reflects the discounted amount. You do not need to enter a code or claim the discount separately.

If you pay later than the discount date, or pay less than the full statement balance, the discount does not apply and the preview shows the full balance. Paying a few invoices individually from the All view, even if their amounts add up to the statement balance, does not capture the discount; the discount is tied to the statement payment specifically.

ACH versus card costs

ACH and card payments have different fee structures.

  • ACH is usually a low flat fee per transaction.
  • Card is usually a percentage of the transaction amount plus a flat fee.

For larger payments, ACH is almost always cheaper. For small payments, the difference is less material. The preview always shows the actual fee for the method you picked, so you can compare ACH and card directly if you want.
